J.L. McCanless papers, 1942-1945.

The collection consists of papers of J.L. McCanless from 1942-1945. The papers consist of correspondence from McCanless, during his military service with the U.S. Army during World War II, mainly to his father Leo McCanless, his stepmother Kathleen McCanless, and his Aunt Inez Doss, all of Canton, Georgia. From August 1942 - June 1944 McCanless wrote from various military training camps in the United States describing his training activities, the areas, and news of family and friends. After June 1944, McCanless wrote from England, France, Belgium, and Germany. His letters describe his trip overseas, the English countryside, the destruction in France, United Service Organization Shows, prices for commodities, V-E day and peace, his opinion of the German people, and his duties questioning Germans to determine their role in the war. Of particular interest is a letter (May 25, 1944) written from Leipzip (Germany) where McCanless describes his participation in the Normandy invasion and the destruction and casualties from the battle.
